Bus tour from PSMW to the Maloof Site

February 21, 2017

Join us for a special out-of-town tour to master woodworker and furniture craftsman Sam Maloof’s (1916-2009) historic home and workshop in Alta Loma, one hour west of Palm Springs. Known worldwide for his mastery of woodworking, his creations demand tens-of-thousands of dollars at auction and are very highly sought after by collectors and museums.

On a comfortable, deluxe tour coach, while viewing specially selected video content on Sam Maloof and craftsman from PBS, you’re whisked away to a very memorable and special place, Sam and Alfreda Maloof’s Historic Home and Workshop. Hear a presentation by the author of “Moving Sam Maloof,” Ann Kovara, who will talk about her experiences as project manager for the relocation of The Maloof Historic Home. With the long-planned Foothill Freeway extension set to cut through the Maloof site, negotiations began to save the buildings by moving them to a nearby location. The original location was a working lemon grove and the new six-acre site was chosen partly for the existing lemon trees that recall the original environment and complement the new landscaping.

Today the relocated residence is open as a living museum. Once again, each room is filled with treasures that give this unique home its spirit. The woodshops were moved to the new site, as were many of the trees from the former Maloof property. The landscaping consists of a natural garden of water-wise California native plants and compatible plants from other Mediterranean climate zones around the world.

Lunch will be provided and weather-permitting, you will be able to walk through the water-wise Maloof Discovery Garden.

Tour proceeds benefit The Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, a part of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios program as well as a Smithsonian Affiliate.
